How to grow closer to God

1. Communicate with God.

Developing a relationship with someone involves communicating with them to build intimacy. Yeah God sees everything but actually telling him about it/ your perspective and opinions opens the door for intimacy. That way, he’s not on the outside looking in on your life and he’ll be included in your daily life. Talk to God like he’s your friend. Talk to him openly and honestly, sharing your thoughts, struggles, and gratitude. This is an effective way to feel/grow closer to God.

2. Be Still and Listen.

Communication is a two way process. God also has opinions and thoughts on the things you share with him or pray for. Giving him a chance to respond and actively listening for what he has to say will give you a sense of closeness and intimacy.

Practical Steps:

After praying, sit in silence for a small period of time and allow God to speak to your heart. You might not hear back immediately or all the time and that’s okay too. He’ll speak when he wants to but giving him the time and space to do that shows you value your relationship with him and what he has to say.

Pay attention to nudges and convictions—sometimes, God speaks through a strong inner feeling.

God speaks in so many ways so pray for him to increase your sensitivity to his voice.

3. Read the Bible.

Read the Bible as often as you can. This is one way to get to know God and who he says he is. You can use a Bible reading plan to stay consistent and focused. Apps like YouVersion offer great devotionals and reading plans.

4. Obey God.

John 15:14 ~ “You are my friends if you do what I command.

Friends share common values and interests. To grow closer to God, love what he loves and care about the things that matter to Him.

  • Love and serve others selflessly.
  • Stand up for justice, mercy, and truth.
  • Live a life that reflects his character.

This also builds trust. It shows that God can trust you to do what he says, and this goes a long way.

5. Worship.

When you worship, you’re opening your heart to connect with God on a deep and personal level. You create a space where God feels welcome and this deepens your connection to him.
