Why does God have many names?

Throughout the Bible, God introduces himself differently to many people. On his first encounter with Abraham, God introduces himself as El Shaddai – God Almighty and then to Moses and the Israelites, he introduced himself as I AM/Yahweh. We see this pattern continue throughout the bible.

Not only did God introduce himself by his names but people in the bible named him too. In Genesis, when Hagar ran away from home and God visited her, she named him El Roi – the God who sees me (Genesis 16:13). She named him according to how she experienced him.

Names of God in the bible include: Adonai (Master), Abba (Father), Jireh (Provider), Rapha (Healer).

God reveals his many names to us when he wants us to have a revelation of him. Each name God reveals to us is a revelation of the role he plays in our lives and the world at large. In Revelations, he revealed himself as the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. This revelation was about how he created the world and how he’s coming soon to fulfil the end. When God revealed himself to Abraham as God Almighty, he followed it up by stating all the mighty things he’ll reward Abraham with if he remains faithful (Genesis 17).

So, each name or title that God reveals to us is what he wants us to experience him as. We have so many wants and needs in this world and God is capable of meeting those needs. He is the healer, provider, prince of peace, protector, shepherd, deliverer, and so on.
